Welcome to Mesquite High School.  Enclosed is the schedule for this year’s solo and ensemble contest.  Please note that your students have been assigned times.  If you find there are conflicts with accompanists, please feel free to adjust your students’ order of performance to accommodate the accompanist. However, please do not change judges.  If a major schedule change is needed contact the contest office and we will adjust the schedule as necessary. NOTE: If a student is prepared to perform at their assigned time, preference will be given to that student.  If you know of DNAs, please mark those sheets at the monitor’s station outside the assigned room, initial, and return them to the monitor.  Students should check in with room monitors 30 minutes ahead of scheduled performance times.  Because of no-shows and other unpredictable circumstances, students should be prepared to play early or stay late.  We will make every effort to keep the contest on schedule.  If you see a conflict on the schedule with solos versus ensemble members, soloists will be worked in either earlier or later.

Students will not be allowed to perform until an ORIGINAL score, WITH MEASURES NUMBERED, has been given to the judge.   There will be no exceptions to this rule.

Warm-up and case storage will be in the Cafeteria.

All medium ensembles, experimental ensembles, and jazz ensembles will perform in the Auditorium.  Jazz Ensembles should bring ALL equipment.   There are upright pianos in the medium ensemble and percussion rooms.  We will provide timpani, bass drum, marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, chimes and gong in the percussion rooms.  If you have any percussion questions call Jana Davis, MHS Percussion Instructor.

Ratings will be posted in the cafeteria approximately 30 minutes after performance. As soon as results are recorded, sheets will be filed in school packets in the contest office.  The contest office will be in the A/C Lounge.

As you can see by the schedule, we are running an extremely large contest again this year (20 judges).  Every effort has been made to honor special scheduling requests and at the same time make a workable schedule.  Please know that we will be as accommodating as possible concerning necessary adjustments during the day and ask that you and your students also remain flexible as problems arise.

For your students’ convenience, we will have a concession stand in the cafeteria run by the MHS Band Boosters.  Soft drinks, nachos, hot dogs, chili, candy, etc. will be available.  Please don’t hesitate to call me if I can be of any assistance to you before the contest.   Good Luck!

SPECIAL NOTE REGARDING ADVANCEMENT TO STATE SOLO & ENSEMBLE:

All Class I soloists wishing to advance to state ARE REQUIRED to perform their entire solo by memory at the region contest. (With the exception of those listed on the UIL website) Memorization will be documented by the judge and the contest office.  Upon entering the room to perform, students should inform the judge of his/her intent to perform from memory.

REMINDER: Be sure your Form 1 is on file in the contest office before your first student is scheduled to perform!  UIL Rules state that a student may not perform if the Form 1 is not on file.  The form must be complete and signed by a principal or superintendent in order to be valid.
